Rodents Are Not Our Friends

Any animal that is tiny and furry is often considered to be “cute” by default, but rats and mice are not very friendly when they invade. The problems that arise from a rodent infestation are beyond the visible damage they cause.

Rats and mice will damage anything they touch in different ways. They constantly excrete wherever they go in order to mark their territory. This ruins any food or drink they get into, and can stain carpeting, rugs, and clothing. Rodents will even chew through walls and insulation to build their hidden nests.

If you spot one rodent in your home, there are more somewhere in the area. The young stay with their families for a little over two weeks on average, and adult rats are constantly scavenging for themselves and their family. Contact Pointe St. Louis for professional rodent services before your food becomes the target of a hungry rodent family!

The Main Issue

Despite what certain cartoons and animated movies say, rats and mice are defensive pests. They prefer to stay hidden, but will bite and attack when they are cornered.

This is just one reason why rodents are a pest problem that should be solved immediately. A few traps and baits from the hardware store may stop a rat or two, but they will not do much to stop a full infestation. Since rodents reproduce so quickly, any pest treatments must be strong enough to target every rodent in the immediate area and actually solve the issue.

Our team of expert technicians know how to solve your rodent problems as soon as possible. We are here to help you live a rodent-free life.

Damage Control

As opposed to tiny insect pests, rodents cause noticeable damage very quickly. Outdoors, moles, voles, and gophers create a system of craters and mounds as they tunnel through a lawn. Rats and mice prefer to be cozy indoors, so they seek warm shelter in hidden areas. They will chew their way through building materials and fabrics in order to reach their ideal location.

Rodents do not chew through everything just for fun. They actually need to constantly gnaw throughout their life because of their teeth! Their teeth are open-rooted, so the teeth will continue growing unless the rodent keeps them filed down. This means that if their teeth get too long, the rodents cannot eat anymore and die from starvation. But this fact does not mean we want rats and mice chewing through everything in our homes!

As rodents continue to reproduce multiple times in their lives, they want a warm space in which to make their soft nests. Rats and mice will shred materials with their strong teeth, such as papers, fabrics, and insulation. If you find random materials shredded throughout the house, it is typically a sign of rodents living in the area.

The fact that rodents will steal our papers and clothing is frustrating enough, but it is even worse when they tear through the house or building itself. While they are small, rodents can create some big holes in the walls, furniture, and insulation, which allows the cold air to sneak in. They will even chew wiring, which can ignite into fires when electricity sparks across the gap in wiring. This is yet another health hazard of rodent infestations.

It is not worth it to wait for a rodent invasion to clear up on its own, because it will not. Rodent infestations need to be handled by the pros as soon as possible.

The Diseases

In addition to the house damage and contamination rodents can bring, they also transmit all kinds of harmful bacteria and diseases. Considering the fact that they live in sewers, dumpsters, and crawl spaces, it is no wonder why rats and mice carry such dangerous pathogens.

Since they crawl all over literal garbage and waste, a large amount of bacteria accumulates on their feet and body. Rats can have pests of their own, including fleas, tapeworms, and pinworms. Flea-infested rats were the cause of the infamous Black Death, or bubonic plague, that wiped out over 100 million Europeans in the Late Middle Ages. Bubonic plague can still be transmitted through infected fleas today – specifically on rats or ground squirrels – which is a horrifying thought.

There are two main ways that rodents can spread diseases to humans: directly and indirectly. Direct transmission is through touching an infected rodent, being scratched or bitten by one, or consuming anything touched by an infected rodent. Some of these diseases include rat-bite fever, hantavirus, and salmonellosis. Conversely, indirect transmission is when a person is bitten by a bloodthirsty insect that fed on an infected rodent first. Mosquitos, fleas, mites, and ticks can all transmit these diseases. There are even more diseases that can be transmitted indirectly, such as plague, flea-borne typhus, and West Nile virus. Whether they are directly or indirectly transmitted, rodent diseases are no joke and should be professionally treated if contracted.

As you can see, there are many health-centered reasons why a rodent infestation needs to be eliminated immediately.
